August 2010
Dear Member,
Following an amazingly enjoyable and challenging season last year I would like to welcome you to the start of the 48th season for Thornbury Choral Society which is looking like being another busy and creative season and one which I hope you will enjoy supporting.
We will commence rehearsals on Monday September 6th for Haydn’s oratorio The Seasons where the concert will be on Saturday, November 20th at 7.30pm in The Castle School Main Hall. This is a work that is seldom performed compared with The Creation and provided a taxing libretto for Haydn but nevertheless includes some inspiring music. A list for hiring Teach CDs will be available on the notice board for a £10 hire fee (£5 refund if returned by Monday 15th November!).
The following Monday, 13th September, we will hold our Welcome Open Evening from 7.30pm with wine, fruit juice and nibbles both before and after the rehearsal to welcome new members and enable everyone to socialize and catch up.
David & Su Joyce have kindly offered to host David’s Dawdle on Saturday 25th September and all Members, Friends, Patrons and Life Members are very welcome to this TCS fundraising event. We will meet at Stone Mill at 6pm for the walk and return for supper from 7.30pm. The cost will be £10 a head which will include your first drink. Those who prefer not to walk are very welcome to come just for the supper, so please sign the list on the notice board or contact Su Joyce on 01454 260542.
After our November concert there will be an opportunity to sing Christmas Carols before we begin rehearsals in January for Carl Orff’s cantata Carmina Burana to be performed on May 7th 2011 with a children’s choir from The Castle School. We hope also that you will sign up for our Workshop for Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle on February 19th 2011.
Soon after the May concert those of you who have signed up to sing with The South Cotswold Choral Group will be practicing for the Verdi Requiem in Tewkesbury Abbey on June 4th 2011 and I hope many of you will support this venture – an opportunity to sing or listen to an outstanding work which small choirs would find too expensive to perform alone.
Following the AGM in June, the committee has decided to replace the Clavinova with a new machine and we look forward to welcoming our new accompanist, Robin Baggs, to try this out! We also enjoyed singing with The Bristol Ensemble and are currently researching possible future events where they can accompany us.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee if you have a suggestion or a query and we will do our best to assist you. If you miss a rehearsal please try to practise your part and check with your singing neighbour if you have missed any vital instructions. Thank you.
Enjoy singing!
